Data-driven journalism can help uncover untold stories. The State of Florida, at the time, did not track deadly officer-involved shootings. Daralene created a database, using crime statistics compiled by local law enforcement agencies and maintained by the state to create one.

Through the data, she was able to extract shootings that identified law enforcement officers as the shooter, to develop a comprehensive listing of officers involved in deadly force by race and the race and sex of their victims. Daralene uncovered flaws in the numbers because of a lack of consistency in reporting officer involved shootings with crime statistics, prompting several police agencies to conduct audits.
